Presentation Title
We Could be Heroes

Most malware is interesting because it's sophisticated or clever. Some malware is interesting because it is used as a political tool to facilitate human rights abuses. The worst thing that can happen as a result of being infected with most forms of crimeware is that a user might lose money - but sometimes the stakes are a great deal higher. This talk will discuss the discovery and function of state-sponsored malware that has been used by the Syrian, Ethiopian, Bahraini, and Vietnamese governments to spy on activists and journalists. This talk will also discuss the ways in which malware researchers can contribute to this important work, even in the highly uncertain Australian regulatory environment.
