Presentation Title
Catch, Patch and Match – Practical ways to Mitigate the risk of cyber threats

The Australian Signals Directorate (ASD) has developed a list of 35 strategies to mitigate targeted cyber intrusions. The list is based on the ASD’s own research into issues discovered during vulnerability assessments and penetration testing, as well as actual security incidents.

At least 85% of the targeted intrusions could be prevented by following the ASD’s Top 4 strategies listed below:

  • use application whitelisting to help prevent malicious software and unapproved programs from running
  • patch applications such as Java, PDF viewers, Flash, web browsers and Microsoft Office
  • patch operating system vulnerabilities
  • restrict administrative privileges to operating systems and applications based on user duties.

See some practical ideas on how to implement these 4 strategies.
